Bring and share supper afterwards at The Knotts. Cost £4 per adult and £2.50 per teenager. Children need to be able to handle adult sized mallets so must be tall enough. Meet at The Royal in Dockray at 4.15pm for shared lifts.
Booking essential - please send names and state whether you will be taking part and meeting at The Royal or going directly to Langwathby to 07712579529 or 017684 82367. If you are planning to attend the supper afterwards please let Jane know numbers and what food you will be bringing.
The Beautiful Game
If you have taken part before you will need few explanations (although those who made up their own rules may need to pay attention) and will know that your fellow valley dwellers will all be out to win!
For those who have not played before, rest assured this is not a disadvantage as beginners luck plays a large part! Golf croquet requires no advanced knowledge and is a friendly, but lively, competitive game with two players in each team. It is not physically taxing, but certainly stimulates the mind. You will be instructed in the basics e.g. hitting a ball, running a hoop and the simple rules before battle commences.
Several members of the Penrith and North Lakes Croquet Club will help to organise the evening - this help is much appreciated.
There will probably be two leagues, with the respective winners playing a grand final in front of a cheering audience!
The venue is the Edenhall and Langwathby Sports Centre which is just off the A686 Penrith to Alston road and is on the right hand side approximately half a mile before you come to the traffic lights on the bridge over the River Eden leading into Langwathby. There is parking either in front of the pavilion or just past it.
Bring and Share supper
After the event all who participated i.e. players, Penrith Club members, and of course partners, are invited to The Knotts, Matterdale for food and drinks. It has been suggested by the MCA that players might like to bring and share whatever food and drink ”takes their fancy”. Please let Jane (email@example.com 017684 82367) know in advance how many of you will go to the supper and what you are planning to bring with you.
The Knotts is off the A5091 from Troutbeck to Ullswater (The A5091 is off the A66 approximately halfway between Penrith and Keswick). Follow the A5091 through Matterdale End and after approximately one mile when you come to Matterdale church on your left take a road up the hill to the right at about "2 o'clock" on a nasty and very dangerous bend. The house is on the right but it is best to continue and park on the grass on the left hand side of the road before you come to the now converted old Village Hall as the parking in the school yard is now occupied by a mobile home.
