About the Event

Peter has been a director of his family group of companies, Lake District Estates, for some 40 years and is currently Chairman of the Lake District Estates which owns Ullswater Steamers, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Peter Rabbit and Friends shops and a number of holiday parks. He is also a Trustee of the Lake District Foundation and was previously a Trustee and Chairman of the Cumbria Community Foundation.

Peter was awarded an O.B.E. in 2014 for services to the rural economy in Cumbria. Peter’s family has owned Ullswater Steamers since 1954 and retains a wealth of information of about them. It is a huge privilege for us that he is willing to share this treasure trove of Ullswater’s heritage with us. The Ullswater Steamers has always been very supportive of FOUW and indeed hosted the launch of the Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank on MV Raven in September last year.

Gordon Lightburn, the Chair of FOUW said: ‘There is no-one better qualified than Peter to regale us with the chronicles and sagas embracing the Valley’s most emblematic and admired icons – our beloved ‘Ullswater Steamers’. We shall enjoy with keen interest, a 170 year history of triumphs, disasters and phoenix like resurrections; as well as the everyday theatre of life on Ullswater……’

Background: FOUW was created in April 2016 to promote awareness of the culture and natural heritage around the Ullswater Way. It was granted charitable status in August 2019. On 29th September 2021 FOUW launched its pioneering Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank website https://www.ullswaterheritage.org.

Please contact Tim Clarke at info@ullswaterheritage.org to register for the talk, indicating whether you wish to follow it in Glenridding Village Hall or by ZOOM. The talk is free. 50 % of any donations received will be donated to FOUW, and 50% to Peter’s charity of choice.
