About the Event
Mike's talk is based on the book he co-authored -
'Keeping Dry and Staying Warm' You the environment, your garments and layering techniques'. He will talk about the journey of writing collaboratively with a very experienced bunch of people in the UK and USA. The book lead to setting up training courses under a CIC company called Outdoor Gear Coach for outdoor professionals and outdoor shop staff. During the talk, he will show some local pictures taken over the last month of ice climbing, skiing and scrambling with Alan Hinkes OBE and others.
The establishment of Outdoor Gear Coach materialised after writing the book on the history of outdoor equipment called Invisible on Everest innovation and the gear makers via a collaboration with three other universities in which they researched and replicated the clothing worn by Mallory on his fateful last climb in 1924. From this, they could see the need for better information for today’s outdoor adventurers. What was needed was generic information applicable to all brands rather than the commercially related individual garment brands’ pitch. From Mike's experience in the industry he could see the inside view of sales staff training at all levels from brand staff to retail to outdoor keenies. There was no independent information and no recognised qualifications for salespeople or outdoor instructors. Outdoor Gear Coach was born.
